About

Our Mission

We are promoting cat adoption while getting older adult cats out of the shelter environment and into a home environment in which they thrive. The health and well-being of café cats comes first and foremost. We believe every adoptable cat needs a home for life and humans become better people when they are with animals. Spending time with an animal produces a feeling of comfort and well-being. Our interactive kitty environment benefits both our human customers and our café cats. We will donate our profits to the Small Lives Matter Kitten Rescue and share their dream that one day animals will no longer be killed in America’s shelters. Every life is important, no matter how small.

With every visit, you help a shelter cat in need.  Thank you for supporting us!

about us

We are a cause-focused business, which means that our business operates in order to support our cause to save the lives of homeless cats and kittens.

The cat experience fees enable us to pay for housing, medical care, spay and neuter surgeries, food and supplies for these cats that are looking for a home for  life. Using a cat café business model allows us support Small Lives Matter Kittens Rescue and their work. This partnership provides the rescue with a full-time foster home where we the cats may stay and provide the funding to pay for their care.

We need visitors and we will fail without your support.

We get cats out of cages, so they are free from stressful shelter-life

Our kitties live with us in our friendly home environment instead being caged at a shelter. We believe cats are curious, active animals that need plenty of room to play and roam. Your visits fund our café. Thanks to you, we are able to save more lives.

We are helping our county become a "no kill" county

Frisky Cat Cafe typically provides home between 25-35 resident cats at any given time, which means that there are significantly less cats at the shelter in need of care. Because of this, our partner shelters (St Johns County Pet Center and Animal Care and Protective Services and Lake City Humane Society) are able to dedicate more time, resources, and volunteers to saving more cats, dogs, and other animals in need.

We partner with other rescues in the area like Feline Canopy of Care who rescue community cats and have a wide network of TNR (trap, neuter and release) volunteers helping to keep homeless cats off the streets in St Johns county.

The Healing Power of Cat Purrs

The frequency of cat purrs may help humans heal. Scientists believe that the benefits of loving a cat may even extend to our health. Studies have shown that people are less likely to die of a heart attack if they own a cat.

Perhaps even more interesting are the reports of cats’ purrs helping people heal.

Why Do Cats Purr?

This is an age-old question and one to which scientists don’t know the exact answer yet. However, it is known that cats often purr when they are happy, sometimes when they’re nervous, very often when they’re hurt, and sometimes when their human is hurt or sick.

In fact, there are many stories of cats cuddling up with and purring for extended times caring for their sick human.

How Can Purrs Help Humans Heal?

For centuries, healers have used the power of sound in their work. It is believed that certain frequencies or tones of sound can have varying healing effects on the body. Here are some of the ways that purrs might help humans with health concerns:

  • Purring releases endorphins in cats, and it can do the same thing in humans, too. Lowered stress hormones are helpful for healing, lowering blood pressure, and helping people cope with illness, too.
  • Cat purring has been shown to fall between 25 and 140 Hz. The same frequency has been shown to aid in the healing of broken bones, joint and tendon repair, and wound healing. Cats are well-known for their ability to heal quickly from their own broken bones, and the incidences of joint problems and bone cancer in cats are low. It’s possible that cat purrs can help humans heal faster, too.
  • Clinical observations of cats that are suffering from upper respiratory conditions resulting in dyspnea, or trouble breathing, indicate that purring helps the cat breathe more easily. In fact, respiratory distress related to heart disease isn’t nearly as common in cats as it is in dogs and humans. A person with respiratory problems might also be able to breathe easier if a purring cat is nearby.
  • There are many stories of people with migraines whose headaches are eased or extinguished when they lie with their heads close to purring cats.

How Purring Heals Humans

Lowering stress — petting a purring cat can calm you.

  • A cat’s purr can decrease the symptoms of dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing) in both cats and humans.
  • Lower blood pressure by interacting with the cat and hearing the purring sound.
  • Reducing the risk of heart disease (cat owners have 40% less risk of having a heart attack)
  • Purr vibrations help to heal infections, swelling, bone healing and growth, pain relief, muscle growth and repair, tendon repair and joint mobility
